The Proust Questionnaire 

What is your idea of perfect happiness?

Having a mind-cracking conversation with someone I love and also someone I just met. 

What is your greatest fear?

Missed opportunities.

Which historical figure do you most identify with?

Hemingway. (Ha!) No seriously, someone with an essential need to produce something beautiful and true before they die.

What is the trait you most deplore in yourself?

The difficulty I have finishing things i start.

What is the trait you most deplore in others?

A façade as a cure for insecurity.

What is your greatest extravagance?

Travel and food. Sometimes parking tickets.

On what occasion do you lie?

When I am ill at ease, I exaggerate.

What do you dislike most about your appearance?

The spare tire nature of my midsection.

Which words or phrases do you most overuse?

‘Amazing’. ‘Dude’. ‘Totally’. (Valley-upbringing be damned!) Also ‘in deed’ apparently. And ‘apparently’.

What is your greatest regret?

Not having sucked the marrow from my education. Ah, youth.

What or who is the greatest love of your life?

J. P. Toman. He makes everything in my world brighter.

When and where were you happiest?

Traveling. Mini-drives. Moving through space makes my mind work more clearly.

Which talent would you most like to have?

To sing. Is there anything better than belting out a tune and having someone want to hear more? 

What is your current state of mind?

A little buzzed from the vodka soda it took me to write these answers candidly. 

If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be?

I would finish what I sta....

If you could change one thing about your family, what would it be?

Ahem. Welll, we would all get along and be happy to sit in the same room with each other. We would live near each other and gather around the table for Sunday dinners.

If you could choose what to come back as, what would it be?

What is your more treasured possession?

I’m not attached to too many physical things. I’d say, my engagement ring, which is now a necklace. Also my computer, because it houses all the content I've created for a decade.

What do you regard as the lowest depth of misery?

Not understanding why someone doesn’t love you.

Where would you like to live?

Um, everywhere?

What is your favorite occupation?

Writing and creating visually beautiful things.

What is the quality you most like in a man?

Security in who he is. Owning that.

What is the quality you most like in a woman?

Frankness.

What do you most value in your friends?

Frankness, loyalty, a sardonic sense of humor.

Who are your favorite writers?

Hemingway, Fitzgerald, Sedaris.

Who is your favorite hero of fiction?

Elizabeth Bennet. Gatsby. Arthur (narrator of my yet unnamed first novel).

Who are your heroes in real life?

My mom, Renaissance woman. Steve Jobs: not the jerk part, the visionary part. Individuals who tell truth to power.

What is it that you most dislike?

People who concern themselves with judging others.

How would you like to die?

Decending from the lecturn after I give my last lecture.

What is your motto?

"Why not?"
